Key Principle

A person who takes another's chattel and exercises temporary dominion over it inconsistent with the owner's rights -- such as taking a vehicle for an unauthorised joyride -- has the intention necessary to convert it and is liable in conversion, even though he intended only a temporary use and not to permanently deprive the owner.
