Combe v Combe

Promissory estoppel operates only as a defence ('a shield not a sword'): it may prevent a party enforcing strict legal rights inconsistently with a promise relied upon, but it cannot create a new cause of action where none would otherwise exist, and does not dispense with the requirement of consideration to found a claim.
