Legal professional privilege protects two classes of confidential material: (1) communications between client and solicitor (directly or through agents) for the purpose of obtaining legal advice, and (2) material obtained by or for the solicitor for the purpose of pending or contemplated litigation; it does not extend to information obtained by the client from a third party (including an employee) outside those purposes.
